Surprising things about ladybugs
For the past few weeks I have been wondering things about
ladybugs and I have learned lots of facts. I have learned enough to write a
blog post about them.
According to an article called Learn about Nature, ladybugs
can be red, yellow, orange, gray, black, brown, and even pink! A video said
European ladybugs are named after Virgin Mary and has 7 spots to remind people
of Virgin Mary’s seven sorrows.
Did you know that there are about 5,000 species of ladybugs?
I learned that these small beetles can have a maximum of 24 spots on their
wings. According to a video, ladybugs protect plants by eating insects that eat
plants. Some bugs they eat are mites and white flies. People still have not
figured out why ladybugs have spots, but it might mean it tastes disgusting.
An article said ladybugs have the same life cycle as
butterflies. The first stage is an egg. The second stage is a larva. The third
stage is a pupa. The fourth and last stage is an adult ladybug.
Did you know that ladybugs are actually beetles?
A video said some
people believe if a ladybug lands on you it is a sign of good luck. They believe
you may find love, have good weather, or get money.
You can tell the difference between a girl and a boy ladybug
because a girl ladybug is larger than a boy ladybug.
Ladybugs can lay more than 1,000 eggs in their lifetime!
Ladybug eggs are so small you can hardly see them. According to a video from
72,000 to 80,000 ladybugs can fit into a gallon jar. When ladybugs eat they
chew from side to side not up and down like we do.
As a summery I learned that ladybugs have the same life
cycle as butterflies, I learned the
difference between a boy and girl, the different colors, and lots of facts
about the spots.
